Why is HPISD Experimenting with Project Based Learning?

HPISD began experimenting with Project/Problem Based Learning (PBL) two years ago and recently added the course selection titled Project Based Learning Seminar II. HPISD prides itself on being "innovative" yet innovation in education means experimentation. As parents are growing wise to Project-Based Learning (PBL) in HPISD, many are reaching out to me and expressing their concerns.

Why Unguided Learning Does not Work is a study written by three professors of education, pointing to the failure of the method PBL where the teacher is a facilitator and students create their own knowledge. The quote found on page four of the paper says it best:

"The best evidence developed over the past half century supports

the view that minimally-guided learning does not enhance student achievement any more than throwing a non-swimmer out of a boat

in the middle of a deep lake supports learning to swim."

The bond was necessary to disrupt the traditional classroom environment and transform our schools into future collaborative learning spaces like Starbucks. As my opponent Stacy Kelly commented, the bond was about more than enrollment, it was about creating new learning environments.

PBL is the "distribution of intelligence" with the intent to lift up the struggling student and bring down the gifted student- all for a shared grade. It induces groupthink and collectivism while encouraging students to create their own meaning. PBL is about creating an environment of equity, not one of equal opportunity.

Project Based Learning is an experimental theory of education and a direct result of the Learner for the Future. It has never been tried and proven successful in providing an education of opportunity rooted in the teaching and mastery of reading, writing, mathematics, science and history.

A vote for Meg Bakich is a vote to preserve district independence, educational traditions and academic excellence.
