My name is Meg Bakich and I'm running for Highland Park ISD Board of Trustees

I am seeking to preserve and build upon the academic excellence that has served our students so well for the past 100 years.

ABOUT ME

ABOUT ME

I am a University of Notre Dame graduate, a 17 year resident of the Park Cities, a proud mother of 5 children, and a long time public education advocate.

I am passionate about education and attend local school board meetings and study sessions regularly. I have testified multiple times before the Senate Education Committee, and am now ready to represent and serve HPISD's students, parents, and community.

As a parent and Park Cities resident, I am committed to maintaining and improving where possible, the quality of education in our community.  With children ranging in age from 12 to 20, I have witnessed curriculum changes and unproven teaching "methods" resulting in diminished focus on academics. For example, reading phonetically has been de-emphasized, math classes now focus on process standards rather than math facts, elementary students are not required to write in cursive and English students seldom learn grammar by diagramming sentences while technology is being integrated for teaching and learning.

I know parents have important questions about their children's education, and I believe the HPISD school board should be accountable to parents as well as the entire community.  Local governance is the best governance, and I promise to be accessible and responsive to you and to act always in your interests.  As a dynamic and diverse district, transparency and trust are vital in bringing our community together.  I will work every day to earn your trust and I will remain transparent and available to you, and our community.   Together we will preserve and build upon the academic excellence that has served our students so well for the past 100 years.

Please help me give a voice to all parents and community members on May 6th by casting your vote for me.

WHY I'M RUNNING

for Board of Trustees

Why Run

I am seeking to preserve and advance the educational traditions, independence and excellence of HPISD.

This is an important time for public education in Texas and in the history of our school district. I want to take all I have learned from the last four years of researching and learning the many intricacies of education in Texas and use it to serve my community.

Educational Traditions

  • I will work to ensure student teacher interaction remains a priority rather than unproven methods of teaching like technology-based education that isolates and commodifies children.

  • I will work to ensure technology is used as a tool with mindful and limited use in the elementary grades where research has shown the dangers of too much screen time on developing brains.

  • I will work to prioritize an academic education of opportunity rooted in knowledge.

Educational Independence

  • I will work to ensure HPISD uses its unique strengths and abilities to address our unique challenges, not just adopt the same vision driving all districts, dictated by Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB)

  • I will work to ensure the ultimate responsibility is ours, at the local level to educate and protect our children.

  • I will work to be a voice for and represent our dynamic and diverse district recognizing transparency and trust are vital in bringing our community together.

Educational Excellence

  • I will work to preserve and build upon the academic excellence that has served our students so well for the past 100 years.

  • I will work to ensure HPISD remains a leader in Texas education.

  • I will work to ensure "The spirit of a people is disclosed by the education of its youth." ~ quote by philosopher Diogenes inscribed above the HPHS auditorium.
